Acupuncture Schools Update

The Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture (PIHMA) is celebrating its 25-year Anniversary this year. Despite the challenge of a pandemic affecting all of us in the community, we have seen the light of some successes…our doctoral program is growing, with a path to completion for current practitioners. We adapted to COVID by moving classes and clinic online with limited ground clinic shifts. We were awarded reaccreditation with zero non-compliances, and our zero percent loan default rate demonstrates that our alumni are finding their own success in these times. While we miss seeing our students and patients on a more regular basis, we are pleased at how our medicines are helping others. We look forward to more opportunities to show this and collaborate with our colleagues to strengthen our profession.

ASAOM, Tucson Arizona’s only nationally accredited college for the study of Asian Body Therapy, Acupuncture, and Chinese herbs, has followed accreditation requirements and recommendations in successfully moving to an online structure for didactic courses, while employing CDC protocols for small class in-person courses. Our clinic has weathered many precautionary shutdowns and still managed to be recognized as an Arizona Daily Star, Reader’s Choice Award recipient for 2020. 2020 also saw ASAOM recognized as having the Number One Lowest Student Default Rate in the country. Meaning, our students are the most consistently capable, in the nation, to successfully manage their student loans after graduation. In recognition of current economic and familial difficulties for prospective applicants to ASAOM, we have compiled an incentive package totalling $1000, inclusive of relocation assistance, for applicants applying to our coming Spring quarter beginning April 4th. Deadlines are mid-march. Against the odds, as a school we continue to meet every challenge, grow, and thrive. Come join us in Tucson:

The Department of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine has been providing acupuncture education for naturopathic medical students for the past twenty-five years. We offer 250-hour didactic courses in the curriculum that provide education in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) fundamentals, diagnosis, pathology, meridians and point systems, therapeutics, needling techniques and Chinese Patent medicine to prepare the students well for their board exams and future practice. The department also provides acupuncture rotations in our clinical facility on campus and across the valley for clinical education and patient care. Thus, SCNM’s Acupuncture Department has been playing an important role in education and patient service.

SCNM keeps growing as an institution. Within the last couple of years, we have added the School of Nutrition with programs including Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Master of Science in Nutrition Leadership. The Ric Scalzo Institute for Botanical Research has been established for continued research in herbal medicine with a state-of-art laboratory, which will significantly improve the research capability and clinical botanical therapeutics. This growth will advance SCNM to University status this year.

Those who dream of becoming a naturopathic physician or nutritionist please contact our admission office. Patients who are interested in treatment of Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Moxibustion, Cupping and Guasha may call our Medical Center or Neil Riordan Center for Regenerative Medicine to schedule an appointment on either student or private rotations.
